Experiments with night vision

March 21, 2018

For a while now I’ve planned to film my movements in the dark, there’s something really freeing about the idea of fumbling about in the dark unseen by human eyes, perhaps seen by other creatures with the right attributes. This use of infrared might be me wanting to capture the way humans view animals or how animals with nocturnal sight see other animals. It was strangely exciting wondering into the studios at night and turning all the lights off. I felt I was completely free to act as I pleased. This level of comfort really helped me let go of what I was doing and to simply move my body as I felt right. Horror films might have conditioned us to feel uncomfortable when looking at night vision footage and watching it back I did feel slightly unnerved by the film, but the knowledge that it’s in the dark does add this sense of unknowing and mystery.
