Sound Work

November 21, 2017

I was working with sound today. From past advice with tutors we'd found that perhaps aspects of the sound track to my work won't quite working right. The musical sounds tended to be a little too busy with for the video, which was effecting the tension that was was built in the work. I struggle with completely understanding how to implicate sound in my work, it's one thing to admire sound work in films and hear and collect sounds you like, but making it work cohesively with the images is something a struggle with.

Today I had the idea to create a soundscape using my body. I call this Body Foley. Playing back my recordings and breathing to match the shots on screen, I began with slow breaths but as the film begins to cut more frequently, spliced with multiple shots of my stomach breathing rapidly I too quickened my breathing as I recorded. Taking my sound from deep breaths to heavy panting until my I go all light headed. I wanted to create a a rising intensity through out some of my films to emulate a type of transformation. I picked to focus on breathing to begin with because I am interested in the ambiguity of heavy breathing, many things can cause one to breath heavily arousal, fear, pain, exhilaration or frustration....

I made other sounds with my body, skin moving over skin, wet lip movements, scratching, clicking in the back of my throat, anything. All to tie the body with the work, reanforce the connection between the viewer to the work and the viewer to the body.
