Traditionally as the skin dries after tanning you are supposed to work the skin by rubbing it over a rough surface, stretching it or sanding it to make it soften. Then it can be worn as a garment, well my I let my skin dry out a bit too much, now it has a more stiff quality to it. I could wet it again and soften it out..but I rather like the more sculptural quality it has to it. In this state I can manipulate it into all sorts of different shapes and it holds it's form. I have ideas about using it as a projection screen, or manipulate it into a bodily shape...I'm trying to ignore the impulse to climb inside it and use it as a cocoon(as I always end up crawling inside my projects) but I might do it anyway.
I had a go at projecting on it in a performance workshop Jomo held on Wednesday afternoons. It looks alright.. It's not doing much for me right now i'll be honest. It has a wonderful texture to the underside that's ass bitty and peeling with worn scratches that I really like, I for some reason feel like I need more movement in it, right now it feels a little stagnant. I don't know maybe with another film it will feel right.
